Esbjerg is a town on the West coast of Jutland in Southwest Denmark.
As of 2013, the town of Esbjerg had a population of 71,491 (making it the fifth largest city in Denmark), with a total of 115,112 people living in the Esbjerg Municipality.
Esbjerg is a seaport, and was at one time Denmark's biggest fishing harbor. Even today, the harbor is still a key part of the town's economy - although today, it is not only fishing, but also oil and other offshore activities (like wind-power) which are based in the harbor.
The town of Esbjerg was first established in 1868, as a replacement for Altona, which had previously been Denmark's most important North Sea harbor. (Altona is today in Germany - it was lost by Denmark in 1864, when Denmark ceded the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Saxe-Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria following the Second Schleswig War).
One of the most recognizable features of the Esbjerg is the Men at Sea (Danish: Mennesket ved Havet) monument which was installed in 1995 to celebrate the municipality's 100th anniversary (which actually occurred in 1994). The monument is a very large white sculpture made up of four 30 feet (9 meter) tall seated males.
